Welcome

Lincoln's
rich past can boast over 2000 years of change and development - few cities
in Europe offer such colourful sequences of prosperity and decline. Archaeological
opportunities are great. Urban developments require exploration and advice
from the archaeologist; whether it involves excavation, recording or preservation.
Our knowledge of the city's past has been revolutionised by archaeological
research in recent decades. It is an on-going process. Exciting and valuable
objects have been discovered, new dimensions added to historical understanding,
new theories proposed which are awaiting future work - both above and
below ground. The results of research in the city - from published reports to guided walks - are available for public interest and enjoyment. the actual processes of urban archaeology are presented through the 'hands-on' educational display at the Lincoln Archaeology Centre. In these various ways, we encourage a greater involvement in Lincoln's archaeology. Lincoln's
organisation of Friends began in 1977 with the aim of bringing together
all sorts of people living in the Lincoln area and beyond who share an
interest in our past and take a pride in it. Through the Friends we encourage
closer liaison with the archaeology team and offer all the support possible,
by publicising their work and achievements, and funding items of equipment
and publications of educational and tourist literature. Meetings are held
monthly throughout the year (excluding July and August). |
